As we add more and more photos to our Member library, our subscribers keep coming up with new ways to use them. A single photograph presents a wealth of design opportunities, so we thought we’d share some easy ways to alter an image. You might be surprised at just how versatile one photograph can be!
We used two landscape photos as our base images, but you can employ the same techniques on any photo. Download them for free with a subscription to Storyblocks.
Landscape photos make great backgrounds for motivational posters. Both of our originals have generous amounts of space for text, as do many of the other photos in our library. In this case the gray sky also helps make the text very readable.
Vintage effects such as toning, vignetting, and scratches can make all the difference in a photo. In the example below, the vintage effects allow us to create a completely new image that’s still very striking. Vintage filters can also add character to a photo, making the image look as if it has a long and rich history.
The following text is a great example of the unexpected ways you can use a photograph. By forming the letters using a nature shot you can create an element of symbolism that wouldn’t otherwise be accomplished with solid-colored text.
Photos can also make great backgrounds for print and online invitations. Similarly to how the inspirational quote fit nicely in the sky of the boat landscape, the lighthouse picture is perfectly suited to an invitation. The open sky next to the tower has enough space for the event details, and converting the image to black and white makes the text easy to read.
Why not use a photo as a logo? The tower and the building at the base of the lighthouse come together to form a perfect “L” shape, so we used them to create the logo below. There’s no rule that says you have to use the entire photo—just take what you need.
Logos are fun to make, but if you want to keep things simple you can always take a photo and turn it into a travel-themed graphic. Combine a beautiful image with some other fun graphics and you’ll have a great custom-made way to remember a trip or advertise a vacation spot.
